Google is introducing sweeping updates to quality standards for Android apps and games, in a direct response to a memory chip shortage hitting the hardware sector due to massive demand from AI data centers. The company revealed two mandatory quality requirements, the first focusing on reducing app memory consumption and improving code efficiency to keep pace with supply constraints that have curtailed available memory capacity in smartphones and affected the daily user experience.

Google explains that the mobile device industry faces tangible hardware supply chain bottlenecks that have altered the reality of memory capacities available for devices on the market.To address this hardware challenge, the company established new performance thresholds covering dynamic memory consumption and bitmap usage, alongside strict requirements to streamline code in order to curb slowdowns and crashes caused by performance issues.The platform gives developers a grace period running until February 2027 to comply with these technical thresholds published on the Android Developers website.

To support engineering teams in meeting these constraints, the company began rolling out tools that send automated alerts as soon as an app exceeds designated memory limits, with plans to launch an advanced diagnostic suite later this year, including a memory limiter feature that programmatically prevents apps from excessively consuming device resources. These standards aim to ensure a stable user experience, especially in the budget smartphone segment, where prices are directly affected by the rising cost and scarcity of memory chips.

The new requirements are not limited to resource efficiency; they also mandate that all apps on the Google Play store implement a zero-click sign-in standard for device-to-device data transfers by April 2027. This standard requires any app with user login, whether optional or mandatory, to automatically restore sign-in state when switching to a new device using the Android Credential Restore API.

These decisions impose an engineering and operational shift on tech companies and software development teams in the Arab world, where the hardware gap is widening between budget device users in Egypt and the Levant and advanced phone users in the Gulf.App developers in regional markets can no longer treat memory as a cheap resource or defer optimizing the consumption of images and dynamic data. Instead, they must review memory management architectures and prevent consumption build-up ahead of the 2027 compliance deadline to avoid affecting app visibility in the store. Complying with the Credential Restore API integration also requires reviewing and updating authentication flows and session security in financial and commercial applications to ensure a seamless transition for users across devices.
