Cozal COT: Isolating inference context prevents attention leakage and restores causal truth to reasoning chains

Step-by-step reasoning chains in generative models appear to explain the logic leading to a solution, but researchers Gabrieli Dominichi, Tig McMullan, Fadl Baraz, Mark Langheinrich, and Martin Gorski demonstrate in a new paper that these steps do not necessarily lead to the final answer. The underlying problem in standard self-generation lies in the dense attention mechanism that allows each inference step to view the entire context, enabling the model to retrieve the answer by directly searching the inputs and then crafting subsequent justifications that seem convincing yet are causally disconnected from how the decision is made.

Artificial justification deceives audit tools when the model fabricates a logical path that has no relation to the method of deriving the result. When the model undertakes a complex reasoning task, open attention gives it the ability to capture solution cues directly from the raw inputs and bypass stepwise logic, a phenomenon known as attention leakage. This separation between what the model writes as an explanation and what it relies on computationally undermines the reliability of explanations and makes reliance on conventional reasoning chains an explicit risk in applications that require precise transparency and accountability.

To address this structural gap, the team introduced the Cozal COT reasoning framework, a system that enforces causal transparency by decomposing complex problems into a directed acyclic graph of atomic sub-questions. The architecture evaluates each node within an isolated context that sees only its immediate parent nodes, establishing a Markovian structure that eliminates attention pathways to any content not directly connected, thereby forcing subsequent predictions to respond to precise local reasoning instead of relying on global context leakage.

Experiments across a varied suite of standard reasoning benchmarks showed that this framework preserves competitive predictive performance while achieving a substantive jump in the truthfulness and precision of explanations. According to the documented figures in the study, the system increased causal sensitivity of intermediate reasoning steps by an average of 12 percentage points, reaching a gap of 21 percentage points compared with the strongest competing base models. In addition to transparency, the organized graph structure provides an in-test intervention capability, whereby localized corrections at a given step automatically and predictably propagate to subsequent reasoning paths without needing to regenerate the entire context.

Reliance on ordinary reasoning chains in enterprise systems gives a false sense of security that threatens strict compliance requirements. This development directly changes the calculations of model engineers and technology managers in banks, fintech firms, health and regulatory institutions across the Gulf, Egypt, and the Levant. Regional teams that build intelligent agents or rely on models for risk assessment, contract auditing, and sensitive decisions are today required to reassess their trust in off-the-shelf model explanations and shift from simple textual prompts to a context-isolation architecture that decomposes problems into causal graphs. This shift means that the ability to construct knowledge graphs, isolate attention, and steer logical pathways becomes the most sought-after skill in local development teams, ensuring that every model decision is mathematically accountable and can be corrected stepwise as soon as any error occurs in live production environments.

This study shows that language models do not need larger sizes as much as they need structural discipline in their reasoning approach. While organizations race to embed AI at the core of their operational processes, causal context isolation constitutes an engineering breakpoint between a model that fabricates marketing justifications and a model that truly reasons step by step.
