A deep-seated belief prevails in the halls of building smart agents that equipping models with ready-made skill bundles is the quickest way to boost their efficiency, yet experimental numbers have shattered this hypothesis from its foundation. A recent experimental study, led by researcher Yu Cheng together with five researchers on the Arkhive platform, reveals that providing an agent with a skill closely related to its task does not necessarily improve its performance; in many cases, the opposite occurs.

The team examined the impact of ready-made programming skills across 87 tasks from the SkillsBench benchmark, after retrieving candidates from a massive repository containing 37,596 skills published in tech stores. The researchers measured the subsequent benefit of a skill as the difference in actual success rate compared with a baseline operation without any skill, under nine configurations combining models and execution frameworks, with deep scrutiny of execution paths, final outputs, and rigorous human review of what the agent delivers in the field.

The very skill that improved the efficiency of one operational configuration caused performance degradation in other configurations in 36.78 % of the tasks.Execution pathExecution path analysis showed that the procedural guidelines recommended within the skill package became an execution burden moving with the model, and instead of helping the agent overcome obstacles, they imposed rigid paths that scattered its focus from the original task requirements and led it to consume its compute resources in repeatedly failing loops.

The surprise did not stop at the executive burden; it also extended to the way the skills themselves are found. The experiment showed that traditional ranking mechanisms based on linguistic fit ignore the skills that are most practically useful. When researchers re-ranked the candidates based on how well the skill actually supports the required operational processes, the success rate of the first option jumped by between 4.35 and 5.80 percentage points across the three configurations that underwent in-depth examination.

Organizing multiple skills determines the outcome by more than simply adding them together in the model context. The study compared skill-ordering methods and found that relying on stage plans and directed dependency diagrams clearly outperforms merely sequencing calls. The benefits of directed dependency diagrams were especially pronounced in complex tasks where the agent was equipped with five or six skills simultaneously, leading the researchers to derive seventeen practices for composing skills that link executable actions, recovery mechanisms, requirement protection, and verification of final outputs.

This experimental shift places engineering teams and corporate automation centers in the Gulf, Egypt and the Levant before direct professional entitlement. The current rush to stack skill libraries in banking and logistics service agents and digital government platforms entails a hidden risk of losing reliability. When a regional organization purchases ready-made toolkits or integrates programming skills without mapping a dependency tree among outputs, it incurs a doubled inference cost on tasks that the model would have performed with higher accuracy if left without embedded procedural constraints.

The practical rule imposed by this data is to stop evaluating skills by matching keywords in software catalogs and to focus on how well they cover precise execution processes. If you are designing an agent that relies on five tools or more, ensure that you give it flexibility to adapt to the path rather than forcing it into a cramped procedural scenario, and make the output dependencies explicit through clear adoption diagrams, because the key in real production environments is the quality of delivery, not the abundance of instructions packed into the context window.
