What changes when a country does not stop at importing artificial-intelligence tools, but places computing, models and training inside a university that tackles its own local problems? That is the bet put forward by the new UGM Indosat NVIDIA AI Technology Center in Yogyakarta. According to a NVIDIA announcement, the centre was launched by Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Indosat and NVIDIA, described as the country’s first university-based artificial-intelligence technology centre.

The centre was created under Indonesia’s AI Excellence Centre initiative, bringing together government, industry and the university to develop applications linked to national priorities. This description is presented not as an independent training hall but as a shared infrastructure that connects research with access to technical resources. Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Mutia Hafiz, said the initiative aims for Indonesia to become a country that develops artificial-intelligence innovations and contributes them globally, tying them to economic growth and national competitiveness.

Computing Is Not a Back-End DetailThe announcement notes that the centre operates on NVIDIA’s full platform and on “GPU Merdeka,” an accelerated-computing-as-a-service platform that Indosat describes as sovereign. According to the source, researchers and students receive enterprise-grade accelerated computing, artificial-intelligence software, open-source pre-trained models and development and technical-guidance frameworks. In practical terms, this design makes access to computing power part of the university research pathway rather than a separate resource.

It says that researchers and developers in Indonesia have historically lacked the computing, models and infrastructure needed to move from idea to impact. In health, a team from the university’s faculties of medicine, public health and nursing is developing the “eNose-TB” technology to screen tuberculosis by analysing breath samples, aiming to provide a rapid, low-cost test in clinics and remote villages without an expensive laboratory or specialist.
