Meta announced at its Connect 2026 conference the launch of the first fully camera-free model of its smart glasses, called Ray-Ban Meta Audio, a clear shift in wearable hardware design to address the security and social concerns that have plagued earlier generations. The new device focuses exclusively on audio, allowing users to listen to music and podcasts, make calls, translate speech in real time, and interact with the company’s new smart assistant, Mews.

The step comes in partnership with the company’s industrial partner «إسيلور لوكسوتيكا», priced from $349 and available for pre-order on October 13. Removing the camera system directly affected the product’s engineering design, reducing the glasses’ weight to just 43 g with a slimmer frame, adding interchangeable nose pads and flexible hinges, a battery that lasts up to 12 hours of continuous use on a single charge and up to 48 hours with the included charging case, and offering 23 color options, prescription lenses, and two frame styles: «كلوب ماستر» and the classic rectangular «بوربانك».

Eliminating the camera is not merely a technical concession but a commercial repositioning that redefines wearable smart devices as continuous voice interfaces.Previous attempts to allay concerns by programmatically disabling the camera when the indicator light was triggered did not dispel reservations about privacy violations in public spaces, limiting the glasses’ adoption to narrow circles. Mark Zuckerberg positions this model in direct competition with portable voice assistants and traditional earphones, arguing that reliance on high-quality audio supports a new, standalone category in the wearable market.

Meta has not abandoned its imaging line, simultaneously unveiling the third generation of its Ray-Ban Meta glasses equipped with a camera, offered in designs such as «أفياتور» and «زينا», featuring a 12-megapixel camera that records ultra-high-definition video, a six-microphone array, and a battery lasting up to nine hours, alongside expanded global distribution and software updates that include on-device data processing to block the company’s access to user information and enhancements for those with hearing impairments.

This technological shift has a direct practical impact on business environments in the Gulf, Egypt, and the broader Middle East, where corporate headquarters, government agencies, and financial institutions impose strict restrictions that prohibit any device with imaging lenses to safeguard the confidentiality of data and meetings. Stripping the glasses of a lens opens the door for employees and professionals to use the AI assistant for daily operational tasks, translation, and note-taking inside offices and meeting rooms, without conflicting with local cybersecurity regulations and privacy policies.

Shifting smart assistants to pure audio tools accelerates the integration of AI into professional routines without colliding with censorship and compliance barriers. The next phase will test the ability of independent audio devices to compete with smart speakers in daily use for both enterprises and individuals.
