OpenAI ends model supply to Cursor following SpaceX acquisition as supply cutoff puts coding environments to dependency test

OpenAI has announced the termination of its agreement to supply models to the AI coding platform Cursor, following SpaceX's official acquisition of the platform in a 60 billion dollar deal. According to the announcement, Cursor's direct access to OpenAI models is scheduled to end on November 12, 2026, bringing to a close a partnership of nearly four years during which Cursor became one of the most widely used development environments for AI-assisted code generation.
OpenAI justified the move by citing concerns over SpaceX's compliance with its terms of service, pointing to what it described as prior contractual breaches committed by Elon Musk-affiliated companies. The company, led by Sam Altman, cited the example of the former Twitter as a Musk-controlled entity that breached its agreement, as well as Musk's own admission under oath that xAI, now merged into SpaceX, violated OpenAI's terms of use. The terms of the contract with Cursor provide a specific window to terminate the agreement upon a change of control or ownership.
OpenAI clarified its intention to exercise its termination right at the latest legally permitted date, ensuring that existing user access continues until the November termination date, while strictly withholding future models from the platform. Although the company emphasized its commitment to supporting developers affected by the transition, it announced no details regarding refunds or compensation for users, nor did it specify precisely which current models might remain available once the deadline passes.
The clash highlights the risks of concentrated technical dependency among software engineering teams and companies across the Gulf, Egypt, and the Levant. Over the past two years, software companies, banks, and startups across the region have relied on Cursor as a core accelerator for software output. Today, software engineers in the region face the fallout of a dispute between tech giants, where an external commercial acquisition cuts off the supply of generative models to their daily development tool, imposing sudden migration costs and developer retraining on alternative environments.
