Huymain and French AI Mistral allocate hundreds of millions of riyals to enable open weights and sovereign AI

Huymain, a subsidiary of the Public Investment Fund, and the French generative-AI specialist Mistral announced the launch of a strategic collaboration worth up to several hundred million riyals, focusing on infrastructure development, AI solution deployment and localisation of advanced models within Saudi Arabia and the region. The agreement places local computing capacity and data centres at the service of open-source leading-edge model requirements, initially targeting cyber-security, speech-processing technologies, and the development of leading models with strong Arabic language performance to support broader regional needs.
The deal gives Mistral direct access to Huymain’s data centres to meet the growing local demand for computing, while the two companies set a joint market-entry strategy targeting sectors subject to strict regulation and oversight.Huymain’s ecosystem spans four pillars: next-generation data centres, cloud platforms and high-performance infrastructure, advanced Arabic-language model development, and transformative sector-specific solutions. Mistral contributes its expertise in high-performance open models, enabling training and inference to run locally without full reliance on closed-cloud platforms.
This collaboration redefines ‘sovereign AI’ with a precise operational concept that goes beyond merely hosting servers geographically. Sovereignty here means enabling organisations to have full control over their data, computing and processes, including adapting and owning models via open weights, running training and inference cycles within the jurisdiction of their choosing, and continuously managing and developing systems without relinquishing learning-cycle control to any external platform. The model meets compliance and security requirements in critical sectors such as financial services, telecommunications, manufacturing, cyber-security and the public sector, where flexibility and independence are essential operational conditions.
