Qatari startup Aligator closed a seed funding round of $1.2 million (QAR 4.3 million), led by Qatar Development Bank and the Next Ventures fund of Media City Qatar, with participation from a group of private investors. The company was founded in 2025 by Ali Abbas and is developing independent AI agents designed for the public relations industry, automating tasks such as drafting and distributing press materials, monitoring media coverage, matching journalists and outlets, and managing communications.

Aligator is backed by a team of Qatar Foundation graduates from Carnegie Mellon Qatar and Texas A&M Qatar, licensed by the Qatar Financial Centre and integrated into Media City Qatar. The new funding will be used to accelerate product development, expand engineering, AI research and marketing teams, and support regional expansion across the Gulf Cooperation Council states and the broader Middle East and North Africa region.

Automating the Operational Burden

Public-relations professionals spend most of their time on repetitive manual tasks: tracking coverage, building media lists, drafting routine materials, and following up on responses, leaving little room for strategy and relationship building. Aligator’s agents handle this operational load autonomously, learning each client’s voice, media landscape, and objectives to deliver fast, consistent work that aligns with the brand.

Ali Abbas, founder of Aligator, says: “Public relations is one of the most relationship-dependent and time-intensive industries, yet much of the daily work is manual, repetitive and ripe for intelligent automation. This investment allows us to accelerate our product roadmap, grow the engineering team, and bring independent AI agents to communications professionals in the region and beyond.”

Betting on Local Talent and National Vision

Mohammad Al-Amadi, executive director of incubators and investment at Qatar Development Bank, sees Aligator as reflecting the growing potential of Qatar’s local innovation ecosystem and the strong tech talent emerging from the country. “At Qatar Development Bank, we are committed to empowering promising companies with capital and supporting the ecosystem needed to develop their solutions, strengthen their capabilities, and move toward the next growth stage.”

For his part, Khalid Mubarak Al-Naïmi, board member of Next Ventures, says: “We were founded to support promising companies that can strengthen the sector and shape its future. Our investment in Aligator reflects that goal, supporting technology that meets real market needs and providing the financial and strategic backing required to expand from Qatar to regional and international markets, in line with Qatar’s National Vision 2030.”

What This Means for the Region

The deal is not just an early-stage funding round; it signals the maturity of Qatar’s startup ecosystem and its ability to produce applied AI technologies built by locally trained talent from the Education City to serve regional and global markets. When sovereign funds and national institutions adopt early AI projects, the conversation shifts from “potential” to “capability,” and expansion across the Gulf and the Middle East becomes a concrete pathway rather than a slogan. For communications professionals in the region, this means tools that understand their language and media context and evolve with their needs, instead of imported solutions imposed on them.
