Patents before computing servers, the Kingdom’s bet on chip chemistry and drug design

The real return on AI investment is determined by the national system's ability to turn algorithms into tangible intellectual property, not merely by stacking servers or importing ready-made hardware. While many sectors focus on text-generation models and office automation, the advanced industrial path is moving toward using specialized models that reveal material properties and predict their physical and chemical behavior, shifting technology from administrative support to the core of production, research and development equations.

The partnership between Aramco and the U.S. firm Sandbox AQ embodies this model in practice; the joint team relies on specialized AI algorithms to analyze data on more than a million catalyst materials and select the most suitable ones for laboratory testing.Accelerating the Laboratory Trial Path via Digital Simulation of Millions of CompoundsIt reduces research costs and cuts time waste in large industrial projects, turning scientific research investment into a sustainable, renewable economic value rather than depleting resources through random attempts.

Jack Heidari, CEO of Sandbox AQ, told the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the next phase gives the Kingdom an exceptional chance to own technology rights locally in advanced materials, pharmaceuticals and semiconductor technology. Heidari believes that possessing infrastructure alone does not create a sustainable advantage unless it is linked to research and development programmes that reflect local market needs and give the state a competitive position in global supply chains, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to shift from a consumer of foreign solutions to a producer of knowledge and exportable patents.

This bet extends to strategic sectors beyond conventional energy; in the semiconductor industry, the domestic market can become a key partner by developing specialized materials used in chip production, leveraging the existing petrochemical infrastructure and accumulated expertise in chemical industries.Chip Manufacturing Entry via Catalyst Material ChemistryIt aligns with energy-battery development pathways, eco-friendly alternatives for chemical compounds, and extends to healthcare where molecular design algorithms accelerate drug innovation and improve diagnostic precision.

The technological sovereignty system integrates responses to complex security and navigation challenges; AI-based air-traffic navigation systems can pinpoint locations accurately even when satellite signals are lost. The rapid evolution of quantum computing also poses a direct threat to digital infrastructure, approaching the breaking of traditional encryption that protects sensitive data today. Regional experiments, such as Bahrain’s digital-space protection trial, confirm that updating technological defenses and developing local quantum-resistant encryption solutions has become an operational necessity rather than a supplementary option.

This shift directly impacts the business environment in the Gulf, Egypt and the Arab region; it compels technology leaders and industrial firms to redirect spending from purchasing off-the-shelf software licenses to investing in simulation models and shared intellectual-property rights. Regarding required competencies, simple command-engineering is no longer a competitive edge for Arab engineers; there is a urgent need to combine data science, materials engineering and computational chemistry to run critical projects and safeguard their networks against the looming threat of quantum hacking.

The real metric of digital-transformation success will not be measured by the size of data centres or the amount spent on imported hardware, but by what the national system can produce in terms of innovative materials, original technologies and intellectual-property rights that can compete in global markets.
