Automating Reasoning Strategies in Agents 39% Cost Reduction Through Code That Inherits Expertise

The large language model is only half of any intelligent agent system, the other half being the reasoning strategy, the programmatic procedure that directs the model’s thinking and turns its repeated calls into a final, completed response. Yet this decisive half remains, to this day, a fully manually crafted process by developers, without the accumulated expertise transferring from one task to another. In a research paper presented at the NURIPS 2026 conference, researchers Taiming Luo, Chi Chou, Tsiang-Huang Hwa, and Jiang Liu revealed the system "Strategist", a higher-level agent that automatically develops reasoning strategies across various tasks without continuous manual intervention.

The new system works by converting every reasoning path into an executable plan written in explicit, reusable code, so that these plans gradually accumulate within a shared, cumulative library. When a new task arrives with a small development test set,the system begins by retrieving relevant code plans from the library, then drafts candidate strategies and tests them on real samples before refining them according to actual performance results. The process does not stop there; every developed strategy automatically enters the library, becoming the foundation on which the system builds its decisions in subsequent tasks, turning the formulation of automated thinking from isolated programming effort into an engineering path that accumulates on its own over time.

In terms of numerical results, experiments on thirty standard metrics showed that "Strategist" outperformed the strongest baseline systems in 24 tests, recording an average accuracy of 74.7 percent compared with 74.0 percent for the best comparable systems, but with a significant operational difference represented by a 39 percent reduction in reasoning cost. The paper also demonstrated that the resulting code plans can transfer and operate directly on entirely new tasks and different artificial-intelligence models without the need to run new search processes or consume additional computing resources, putting an end to wasted compute cycles in resetting reasoning strategies for each model individually.

This shift has a clear operational implication for institutions and start-ups in the Gulf, Egypt, and the region, where billing for reasoning code consumption represents a rising financial burden on development teams building agents to automate customer service or analyze complex legal and financial documents. Reducing reasoning cost by about 39 percent while maintaining the same accuracy redefines the economic viability of local automation projects, enabling a reduction in spending on foreign servers or private pulls. More importantly, transferring expertise through reusable code changes the developer skill required in Riyadh, Cairo, and Abu Dhabi; instead of spending hundreds of hours writing fragile guidance scripts and experimenting with manual paths for each task, the engineer’s focus shifts to building evaluation frameworks and cumulative libraries that evolve on their own.

Transforming the neglected part of agent systems, the thinking strategies, into a self-evolving software component moves the engineering of intelligent systems forward. If you oversee the construction of intelligent agent paths in your organization, the work plan now requires a review of the reasoning design approach, moving from isolated individual experimentation logic to a structure that ensures the inheritance of expertise across tasks, thereby guaranteeing higher accuracy and more disciplined consumption calculations.
