AWS announces two Microcredentials for AI agents focused on securing identities and databases

AWS announced yesterday that it now offers two new Microcredentials focusing on AI agent skills: “AWS Securing Agent Identities Demonstrated” and “AWS Databases for Generative AI Demonstrated”. Both are available for free on AWS Skill Builder without a subscription, and both are practical assessments with a limited time in a live cloud environment: no multiple-choice questions, only scenarios that succeed or fail.

First Certificate: Securing Agent IdentitiesIt validates your ability to harden identity and access across a fleet of agent workloads. Tasks include: provisioning self-hosted workload identities for agents, imposing tag-based access control on identity management, securing inbound access with scope-limited JWT delegation, selecting the appropriate authentication method for each connector (SigV4 versus JWT), migrating agents to production-ready JWT verification, and creating audit trails for token operations. Covered services: Amazon Bedrock Agent Core, Amazon CodeGuru, AWS IAM, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon CloudWatch, and AWS Systems Manager. It targets cloud security engineers and solutions engineers who secure agent workloads on AWS.

Second Certificate: Databases for AgentsIt validates your ability to build and troubleshoot the data layer that powers agents. Tasks: configuring Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and Amazon DynamoDB for agent access and memory, setting up Bedrock Knowledge Bases for document retrieval, configuring MCP servers to debug agent interactions with the database, and optimizing agent queries. Services: Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Bedrock, AWS Lambda, Amazon CloudWatch, and AWS Secrets Manager. It targets database solution engineers, database engineers, solutions engineers, and AI/ML engineers working on the data layer for agent applications on AWS.

How It Works:Each certificate is a practical, timed lab assessment. It runs in a live AWS environment to solve real-world challenges. No multiple-choice questions. Either the solution works or it does not. Upon passing, you receive a digital badge via Credly that can be shared on LinkedIn, your resume, or with your team.

Why Microcredentials:Traditional AWS certifications demonstrate what you know. Microcredentials demonstrate what you can do. They complement each other: certifications show breadth of knowledge across domains, while microcredentials prove hands-on delivery in specific high-demand skill areas. These additions join the existing portfolio, which includes: AWS Serverless Demonstrated, AWS Generative AI Demonstrated, AWS Application Networking Demonstrated, AWS Incident Response Demonstrated, AWS MLOps Demonstrated, AWS Data Streaming Demonstrated, AWS Data Lakehouse Demonstrated, and AWS Data Visualization Demonstrated.

What It Means for Engineers in the Region:The Gulf and Egypt markets are rapidly moving toward agent workloads on AWS, from automating customer service to analyzing enterprise documents. An engineer who can demonstrate the ability to secure agent identities or engineer their data layer becomes a natural candidate for projects that require AWS as a virtual platform. The two certificates are free, available now, and require only an AWS account and time for hands-on learning, a low barrier to entry for a tangible career return.
