Apple has repriced its small home speaker, raising the price by fifty dollars in one go, but the software value the company cites to justify this jump remains pending in the future. In its event dedicated to smart home devices, the company unveiled the refreshed HomePod mini for $149, a fifty-dollar increase over the original version that appeared more than six years ago in 2020, placing a S10 chip at the heart of the new device with a promise to embed generative AI capabilities via Siri, without announcing any date for this new assistant to reach buyers.

Current gains that the buyer receives at launch are limited to audio hardware and physical processing; the speaker relies on the S10 chip to improve dynamic range, raise volume level, and enhance sound performance, alongside control of smart-home devices via voice commands. The company also added the ability for the speaker to listen for sounds such as a smoke alarm and send a direct notification to users' phones, a feature that Alexa devices have offered for years, making the addition a delayed hardware catch-up rather than a unique technical leap.

The biggest bet was expected to revolve around voice AI that could handle multi-turn conversations, but the company chose to sell the hardware now and defer the software brain to a future update. This postponement leaves the device dependent on integration within the closed ecosystem; the new speaker allows pairing with Apple TV 4K, Apple’s streaming box, to create a four-speaker home entertainment system, or to function as a virtual speaker for Macs in video calls and audio playback. Apple also equipped the device with a visual feature called Sound Glow, which turns the top surface into an interactive panel that pulsates in sync with music using album-cover colors, or displays animated graphics accompanied by natural sounds such as rain and ocean waves.

This factor practically changes the equation for smart-system engineers and technical procurement officials in the Gulf, Egypt, and the region overall. When the price of the small audio unit jumps to $149, the cost of establishing office spaces and homes that require multiple speaker units rises by roughly half, without any immediate benefit in Arabic language interaction efficiency or execution of complex commands. And because the multi-turn smart-conversation feature is delayed without a timetable, system integration teams cannot rely on the device as an independent voice agent for automating tasks, finding themselves with a high-cost audio playback tool awaiting a upgrade that may take a long time.

The new speaker is available in five colors, pink, green, blue, white, and midnight black, with pre-order requests now open and October 30 set as the start of deliveries. In this scenario, the real upgrade value is not yet complete; the buyer pays today an extra price for improved audio hardware and a luminous screen, while true AI remains a promise hanging over a roadmap of updates whose dates are unknown.
