The academic and educational research platform “AREP” closed an early financing round preceding the first phase, led by the investment firm “Golden Assets Investment”. It is the first publicly announced financing round for the Saudi platform since its founding in 2023. The platform, founded by Hussein Al-Hamami, Ibrahim Asiri, Ryan Ahmed, and Alhanouf Al-Hamami, will allocate the funds to develop its technical products and expand operations within the Saudi market, while also preparing for possible regional expansion at a later stage, positioning its strategy to help close training gaps and secure equipment in research and educational laboratories to support the kingdom’s research, development and innovation ecosystem.

The platform’s business model relies on two integrated tracks that address both efficiency and supply challenges simultaneously:The first track is the “AREP Academy”, which offers specialized training programs in laboratory and research sciences by combining digital education with hands-on practice. The platform includes video courses, laboratory simulations, knowledge resources, AI-powered performance tools, and virtual lab tests, as well as practical workshops held within university labs and research centres. The second track is the “AREP Digital Marketplace”, a platform dedicated to laboratory and research supply chains that enables academic and research institutions to purchase equipment and scientific consumables online, addressing logistical challenges and the complex procurement hurdles faced by research environments.

The construction of this operational model rests on cumulative support from incubators and technology initiatives within the Saudi entrepreneurship ecosystem, with the platform receiving backing from programs such as MVPLAB and BOOST in the “The Garage” incubator, as well as support from the National Program for Development of Information Technology (NTDP). This movement reflects a clear shift in venture capital toward deep infrastructure that enables scientific research, moving beyond ordinary consumer applications toward building specialized tools that serve the precise and operationally efficient needs of laboratories and academic institutions.

Shift toward digitizing supply chains and lab simulation reshapes academic and research spending priorities in the regionFor lab supervisors, procurement departments and researchers at universities and scientific centres across the Gulf and the region, this development confirms that the research development challenge is not limited to budgets alone, but also to the time it takes for laboratory supplies to arrive and the lack of intelligent assessment tools for personnel. A platform that links hands-on training and digital simulation with direct procurement gives universities and institutions a clear choice between remaining dependent on lengthy bureaucratic cycles of traditional purchasing or moving to digital platforms that reduce time waste and ensure continuity of lab experiments. If you manage a lab or oversee a research budget, your next step is to evaluate the efficiency of your current supply chains and test how virtual simulation can boost your team’s productivity and lower the cost of consumables before purchase.
