Effective Use of AI: Why Do Two People Get Different Results from the Same Tool?

The question today is no longer: do you use AI? It is: how do you use it? With the widespread adoption of tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, among others, advanced technologies have become available to millions of users around the world. Yet the results people achieve still vary strikingly, even when they use the same tool. Some have doubled their productivity, improved the quality of their decisions, accelerated learning and completed work faster. Others still see these tools merely as a way to write text or summarise content, and sometimes feel that their capabilities are overstated.
This disparity usually has less to do with the capabilities of the model itself than with how it is used. AI does not create value automatically. It amplifies the capabilities of its user. The clearer a person's thinking and the more precisely they understand the problem they are trying to solve, the more accurate and useful the AI's output will be. This is why two people can get completely different results from the same tool: the real difference lies in the quality of the thinking that precedes its use.
Before asking AI for anything, it is important to define the problem you want to solve or the goal you want to achieve. An effective user does not treat AI as an answer engine, but as a partner that helps them work through a problem. When the problem is well defined, the model can more easily provide a response that addresses the actual need. This does not mean that AI replaces people. The most effective relationship is complementary: people set goals, establish priorities, interpret context and make the final decision, while AI analyses information, generates ideas and explores alternatives. The more balanced this division of roles, the better the results.
Effective use, conversely, does not mean turning to the tool for every task. Some situations require human judgement, a deep understanding of context or professional responsibility that cannot be delegated. It is important to recognise that model outputs are a starting point, not the final word. However advanced they become, models can make mistakes or misunderstand context. A professional user therefore treats an answer as an intelligent draft that remains open to review, making critical thinking the real safeguard against blind reliance. Effective use of AI is not a one-step process, but an interactive dialogue that begins with understanding the problem, then reviews and improves the results until the best possible output is reached. During this process, it is not only the quality of the results that improves. The user's way of thinking, ability to analyse problems and capacity to make decisions also develop.

As this field continues to develop rapidly, AI tools will become a natural part of most professions. The competitive advantage, however, will not come from owning the latest model or using the most popular tools. It will come from having a deliberate method for working with them. The future will belong to those who can combine their human expertise with the capabilities of AI, who know when to rely on it and when to rely on their own judgement, and how to apply its capabilities to their goals efficiently and responsibly.
Ultimately, the secret to using AI effectively lies not in the tool itself, but in the person using it. The tools are available to everyone. The real difference is made by those with clarity of vision, sound thinking, the ability to ask the right questions and the discipline to review answers critically. Only then does AI move from being merely an advanced technology to becoming a genuine partner in learning, creativity and decision-making.
