Teaching children AI at an early age

An investment in the future or a new burden on childhood?

Teaching children programming and artificial intelligence is no longer a limited educational trend. It has become part of a broad narrative that links readiness for the future with starting technology education early. With phrases such as “programming is the language of the future” and “teach your child AI before it is too late” repeated so often, many parents find themselves under real pressure to enrol their children in technology courses for fear that they will fall behind their peers.

But the question worth discussing is not whether AI is important. That is difficult to deny. The question is what a child needs to learn first, at what age and in what way.

As an AI trainer, I receive many requests to provide courses for children. Although preparing the next generation to deal with technology is important, starting early does not necessarily mean starting correctly. We may give a child advanced tools before helping them build the basic capabilities needed to use those tools consciously and independently.

The problem is not technology, but timing

Children’s minds, particularly before the age of thirteen, pass through important stages of cognitive, social and emotional development. At this stage, a child needs to develop the ability to concentrate, communicate, solve problems, regulate emotions, express ideas and understand the world through direct experience.

Teaching programming or the principles of AI is not harmful in itself. It can be useful when presented in a way that suits the child’s age and in a context based on play, exploration and interaction. The risk begins when it turns into additional hours in front of screens, complex technical content, or another contest in which children are compared with one another.

A child first needs to learn how to think before learning how to ask a machine to think with them.

Not every digital experience is real education

A common mistake is to treat every activity delivered through a screen as educational. A child may spend a long time using an application labelled “educational” without acquiring a deep understanding or a skill that can be used outside it.

Real learning is not measured by the number of platforms a child uses or the number of programming commands they memorise. It is measured by their ability to ask questions, try solutions, tolerate mistakes, discuss their ideas and transfer what they have learned to new situations.

Even the use of AI tools can become a passive activity if the child’s role is limited to typing a question and waiting for a ready-made answer. The child may become accustomed to receiving quick solutions instead of making the effort to read, analyse and experiment.

A child burdened by screens before they begin

Calls to teach AI come at a time when many children already suffer from excessive screen use. They move between electronic games, short videos and social platforms, and then we add new digital courses to their day under the heading of preparing for the future.

The problem here concerns not only the type of screen, but what it displaces from the child’s life. Every additional hour in front of a device may come at the expense of movement, sleep, reading, free play, conversation with family, or direct interaction with friends.

Fast and constantly changing content can also make quieter activities, such as reading a story, solving a problem or completing a craft project, less appealing to a child. Discussion of AI education therefore cannot be separated from the broader debate about digital habits within the family.

Human skills come before technical skills

Real preparation for the future does not begin by teaching a child to use the latest tools, because those tools will change many times before they enter the labour market. What will truly remain is a set of basic skills that help them adapt to any new technology.

A child needs strong language skills that enable them to understand and express ideas. They need logical thinking so that they can distinguish a claim from evidence. They also need imagination, curiosity, cooperation, independence and the ability to make decisions.

These skills are not built through screens alone. They grow through conversation, reading, play, experimentation and interaction with people and the real world. The stronger this foundation is, the more able the child will later be to use AI as a tool rather than as a substitute for their mind.

What does a child need instead of more courses?

A child needs activities that stimulate mind and body in a balanced way. Sports such as swimming, football and cycling help build fitness, discipline, patience and teamwork.

Hands-on activities such as drawing, colouring, construction and crafts provide opportunities to develop imagination, precision, planning and self-expression. Reading gives the child room for considered thought and helps develop language, attention and an understanding of different perspectives.

Playing outdoors and interacting with nature also give a child experiences that a screen cannot replace. Gardening, observing living things, exploring and free play allow learning through the senses and help build a more realistic relationship with the surrounding world.

How do we teach children AI correctly?

The aim is not to keep children away from technology, but to put it in its proper place. AI concepts can be introduced through simple activities that do not depend entirely on screens, such as classification, pattern recognition, sequencing steps and discussing how machines make decisions.

A child can be taught that AI can make mistakes, that its answers need to be reviewed and that personal data should not be shared without care. They should also learn the difference between using a tool for assistance and using it to avoid thinking or to do their homework for them.

Technical courses should be short, age-appropriate and based on projects and play. They should be supervised by someone who understands children’s educational needs, not only by someone with technical knowledge.

Do not let fear determine your children’s future

A child will not fall behind the future because they did not learn programming at the age of seven. But they may lose an important part of childhood if their day is filled with courses, screens and constant comparisons.

AI is part of the future, but it should not become the centre of a child’s life. Our responsibility is not only to prepare children who can use tools well, but to build people who can think, critique, create, communicate and make decisions.

Before enrolling your child in a new course, ask yourself: do they need this skill now? Is the content appropriate for their age? Will they use technology actively or merely consume it? And which human or physical activity will lose time to the course?

Childhood is a formative stage that cannot be recovered. Conscious parenting does not reject technology, but neither does it allow technology to come before a child’s needs or consume the years in which they need to play, move, read, explore and build a genuine relationship with life.
