Flipboard announced its acquisition of Grays, a platform specializing in building and customizing algorithmic feeds across the AT Protocol, in a move reflecting accelerating efforts to transform decentralized social networks from experimental discussion spaces into a fully fledged digital economy generating measurable returns.

Founded in Portland, Grays has focused since its launch about twenty-one months ago on solving a core dilemma facing content publishers and community curators on Bluesky: how someone spending hours curating a specialized feed and sorting its posts can generate direct income from their efforts without relying on traditional individual tracking models. The platform provided tools allowing users to create, customize, and manage custom feeds that followers can pin as a primary interface or call within other applications built on the same protocol.

Operational figures for the small platform, whose team did not exceed two people and which raised a one-million-dollar seed round in early 2025, revealed genuine demand for these tools. Grays managed to deliver more than forty-one billion posts to nearly twelve million people across more than seven thousand active feeds, successfully monetizing about sixty percent of the traffic passing through it.

Grays' advertising philosophy relies on explicit contextual ads as a complete alternative to digital tracking and surveillance systems.Rather than tracking user behavior and personal data across websites, the platform allows advertisers to purchase space within a specialized feed managed by domain experts, such as game developer communities or specialized analytics. The feed creator retains the freedom to select which ads appear to their audience, with revenue split seventy percent to the creator and thirty percent to the platform.

Flipboard, which previously used Grays' technology in its new application Surf, seeks through this acquisition to integrate feed infrastructure with its extensive commercial advertiser network, expanding the ability to build and monetize feeds across the entire AT Protocol ecosystem as well as Flipboard's own application.

For content creators and digital publishers across the Gulf, Egypt, and the Levant, this move opens a practical path to evaluating presence on open social networks. The new model offers independent media teams and specialists in the region the opportunity to build news or professional feeds tailored to specific sectors, such as fintech, energy, or e-commerce, generating direct returns through contextual advertising that respects audience privacy and breaks centralized platforms' monopoly over distribution algorithms and revenue sharing.

The shift toward feed monetization presents media and technology organizations in our markets with a clear operational choice: either settle for remaining within the walled gardens of closed platforms and accepting whatever their algorithms yield, or invest in building communities and data-sovereign feeds that achieve financial sustainability grounded in context and curation quality.
