Google Cloud and Accenture establish a joint unit as the AI race moves from selling models to sending field engineers

Google Cloud, together with global consulting firm Accenture, launched a joint business unit called Accenture Gemini Business Projects Group, aimed at sending specialised engineers directly into organisations to help accelerate adoption of AI tools and services. Under the agreement, Google will train up to a thousand Accenture field-deployment engineers to work within companies and build custom applications using the Gemini Enterprise platform, with the unit organisationally reporting to Accenture as confirmed by a Google spokesperson.
This move comes at the heart of a broad shift in the strategies of major tech companies;The commercial bet is no longer limited to developing generative models; it has expanded to turning integration and field-deployment processes into a standalone industry valued at trillions of dollars.Competing firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft and Amazon have established independent business units focused on field-deployment engineers, responding to the economic dilemma facing cloud providers; these companies invest hundreds of billions of dollars annually in GPUs, data centres and power supply, while direct AI-related revenue remains a small fraction of those massive investments.
Google’s figures reflect the scale of this pressure; despite Google Cloud achieving $24.8 billion in revenue in Q2, largely driven by enterprise AI, its parent Alphabet has accumulated purchase obligations and future contracts amounting to $811 billion as of the end of June. Return on investment continues to falter because organisations struggle to convert their technology spend into clear financial gains or cost reductions, due to a lack of talent capable of integrating AI tools into complex workflow cycles, a gap that field-deployment engineers aim to fill by combining commercial insight with expertise in building autonomous agents.
Corporate spending data reveal Google’s urgency; Ramp’s August data show Google captures only about 6 % of AI spend among its US corporate customers, compared with 43.5 % for Anthropic and 39.7 % for OpenAI. Although Google notes that this sample excludes large strategic contracts it signs with entities such as Oracle, Meta and ServiceNow, the company hastened to broaden its field-deployment umbrella, having previously identified a $750 million partner ecosystem that included CapGemini, Cognizant and Deloitte, alongside an agreement with CVC Capital Partners to send engineers to its portfolio companies. In contrast, Accenture seeks to protect its position from startups specialising in field-deployment, such as Audi collaborating with Anthropic, or The Development Co affiliated with OpenAI, replicating its prior-year partnership model with Microsoft, ServiceNow and SAP.

The enterprise AI battle is steadily moving to the ground; whoever succeeds in supplying engineers capable of untangling operational bottlenecks within client offices will secure justification for multi-billion cloud spending and turn tech promises into sustainable contracts.
