Apple has launched an operating system updatemacOS 27 Golden Gate, bringing a core upgrade to the smart assistant Siri that focuses on reading screen context and desktop space, alongside a set of visual tweaks including Liquid Glass icons with a control bar for their appearance, more consistent window corners, sidebars that stretch from edge to edge, and improvements in highlighting active windows. This step moves AI capabilities from isolated windows to the operating system core, granting Siri direct access to app content, files, messages, and email, putting the system in direct competition with independent productivity software and side-browser assistants
The new upgrade targets competition with specialized window-reading tools such as Highlight, Caddy and Littlebird, by enabling users to invoke Siri at any point on the screen to answer questions about what they see, summarize content, or suggest alternative options while shopping. Apple also added visual control tools called Visual Intelligence, where the Command + Shift + Space shortcut immediately adds the active window to the model’s context, while Command + Shift + 6 activates a precise pointer to select a custom portion of the screen to ask a question about, perform an image search, or trigger quick actions such as saving contacts and pinpointing geographic addresses
The updates included the search engineSpotlight, which allowed directing questions directly to Siri to retrieve answers from the web, with the ability to limit the search scope and context to apps, files, actions, or the clipboard, as well as retrieve search history and run shortcuts. By linking the assistant to the user's files, email and messages, it became possible to extract specific data such as membership numbers, upcoming travel details, or article embargo dates without opening the documents themselves, a step that narrows the gap with advanced productivity tools like Raycast even though the latter remains more extensible
In terms of writing and office work, Apple used the desktop screen space to activate generative editing tools in any text field, allowing proofreading, rephrasing, improvement or drafting directly. Safari also supported a page-tracking feature to monitor price drops and adjust privacy policies and new posts on sites that do not provide RSS feeds, alongside automatic tab organization by topic, and automatic file-name suggestions in Finder when downloading or renaming files based on folder and document context, accompanied by child-safety controls and improved email search features
This shift forces a reassessment of processes within startups and digital teams across the Gulf, Egypt and the Levant, especially regarding software subscription items. Merging editing tools, window reading, page tracking and clipboard management into the system reduces the need to purchase monthly dollar-priced subscriptions for external helper tools for each employee, supporting efforts to rationalize cloud operating costs for teams in Egypt and the Levant. Conversely, it places developers and entrepreneurs in innovation hubs in Riyadh and Dubai, who build surface-level productivity apps, against a free, integrated competitor that is virtually available on Mac computers equipped with Apple Silicon chips from 2020 models up to the MacBook Neo line, also requiring IT managers to review compliance policies and screen-reading permissions to protect sensitive data
This upgrade demonstrates that competition among work tools no longer revolves around the efficiency of an isolated chat window, but around who has access to daily desktop work context and can seamlessly embed it into the computer hardware and core system actions
