Mavi, a platform that connects companies with accounting and finance talent skilled in AI technologies, emerged from stealth, announcing a seed round of $4 million led by Harlem Capital last year, disclosed only now. The company was founded in 2023 by Moli Liu and Aman Bori, and aims to address the acute shortage of accounting staff in the United States through a model that recruits and hires globally technically qualified finance talent within days, handling legal paperwork, employment contracts, cross-border compliance and payroll.

The platform rests on a structural thesis crafted by its co-CEO Moli Liu, who previously worked at tech firms such as Ramp, Lyft and Dropbox. Liu argues that software automation tools alone cannot solve the accounting sector’s crises, because AI tools automate most entry-level roles in finance departments, producing a reverse effect: a long-term worsening of the shortage of mid-level expertise as the pool of junior staff who advance to acquire the needed experience shrinks.

This shift places a double burden on senior staff and finance departments; the more an organization expands its use of AI tools for routine tasks, the greater the need for human intervention and judgment to make critical decisions in sensitive tasks and to spot errors made by models. The proliferation of AI tools in finance departments does not ease pressure on leaders, but raises expectations of their analytical and judgmental sense.especially as finance teams are required to accomplish broader tasks with fewer resources.

This trajectory redefines the modern professional accountant; distinction is no longer based on mastery of traditional entries, but on a solid grounding in financial standards combined with the ability to steer AI models, review their outputs to detect deviations, integrate large language models into daily financial workflows, and handle ERP systems designed specifically for AI. In contrast, the traditional accountant is limited to accounting principles without practical understanding of how to audit and manage AI tools within the financial environment.

Mavi currently includes more than 3,000 accounting specialists and serves clients such as personal-care products company Athena Club, focusing on fulfilling full-time mid-level and senior positions to support internal finance teams. The platform tackles the reluctance of some U.S. companies to use global labor, whether due to challenges in managing international contracts or pre-existing doubts about talent quality, asserting that a new worldwide wave of high-caliber talent matching or exceeding U.S. market standards is emerging.

This shift carries direct strategic implications for capital and business markets in the Arab region. In shared services centers and financial outsourcing in Egypt and the Levant, the model means that competition based on lowering labor costs for manual entry and bookkeeping is now threatened by automation; the accountant’s market value becomes linked to proficiency in overseeing intelligent systems and auditing language-model outputs in tax and financial records. In the Gulf markets, particularly among large corporations and banks accelerating investment in automated ERP software, the lesson lies in balancing spend; purchasing the latest automation solutions without training mid-level staff in critical thinking and accounting verification does not reduce costs, but exposes the organization to costly audit and operational risks when model errors go unnoticed by expert human oversight.

The editorial board believes that the reshaping of accounting roles reveals that the current AI era is not a phase of dispensing with the human element, but a re-pricing of expertise; tasks that can be computerized lose value, while the value of professional judgment capable of directing the machine and holding its calculations accountable rises.
