Amazon announced that it is assigning the task of combating digital phishing messages to artificial intelligence, by enabling shoppers to instantly verify the authenticity of messages they receive in the company's name. The e-commerce giant’s customer-service receives about 360,000 inquiries each year from users who wonder whether the alerts and messages they get are genuine or phishing attempts. Today, the company is allowing users of its consumer-focused service, Alexa for Shopping, to take on the task of answering these questions and determining the credibility of communications via the website and mobile app.

The company said that the AI system can make a definitive determination about whether a message actually originated from its own systems, by matching it against records of billions of messages Amazon sends worldwide. The model’s audit relies on examining the sender’s data, the text content, the time of sending, and the attached metadata to assess the authenticity of the communication. The company is betting on improving the system’s accuracy in the future as users report suspicious messages more frequently, which would enhance the algorithms’ ability to detect evolving fraud patterns with greater precision.

These technical capabilities build on earlier efforts by Amazon to counter waves of digital deception targeting its customers, which have included fake order-confirmation messages, counterfeit Prime-subscription renewal notices, account-suspension warnings, delivery alerts, and fraudulent job offers. Earlier this year, the company provided a dedicated email address for receiving and verifying suspicious messages, along with an online form on the customer-service page, and today moves that defensive function directly into the smart interactive chat.

This update reflects an explicit shift in Amazon’s strategy to develop its smart assistant toward proactive shopping-related tasks.Alexa is no longer limited to general answers; it now offers personalized deals, creates shopping guides, helps customers reorder everyday items, provides smart product summaries, and converts handwritten shopping lists into digital text. The company also added a feature that notifies shoppers when new products from their favorite brands or new books and albums are released, thereby integrating the purchasing experience with consumer-protection mechanisms in a single interface.

This model has a direct practical implication for e-commerce and delivery teams in the Gulf, Egypt and the Levant, where the cost of dealing with phishing messages that impersonate major platforms and exploit parcel-delivery and payment-update notifications is rising. Shifting the burden of verifying hundreds of thousands of inquiries from human call centres to an inferential agent tied directly to central transmission records reduces operational spending on technical support and gives operators in the region an immediate way to protect their brand and customer trust without expanding manual assistance teams. The approach also sets a new commercial benchmark for the shopper experience, as protection and anti-spoofing tools become embedded in the purchase interface itself rather than a separate, complex pathway.
