The Shipt platform, which specializes in same-day delivery and is owned by Target, announced the launch of its new tool, Ask Shipt, officially joining the race to integrate generative AI agents and assistants into e-commerce and grocery-delivery applications. The tool allows shoppers to move beyond the traditional approach of entering keywords and manually searching for individual items, instead converting direct text commands and images into complete shopping baskets ready for instant checkout through the app and website.

The tool relies on natural language processing and multimodal capabilities to deconstruct shoppers’ complex requirements and map them to compatible products in inventory. Operational examples demonstrate the assistant’s ability to fulfill requests tied to specific occasions and precise headcounts, such as creating a basket for a gathering of 25 people that includes late-morning breakfast items, or assembling a basket for school meals and snacks.Shoppers no longer have to sort components manually; they can set a budget ceiling for the assistant to select items that fit within it.For example, a request to prepare a family dinner for five people costing no more than $35, along with a feature to upload a picture of a dish from the internet or a restaurant so the assistant can recognize its basic ingredients and add them directly to the shopping basket.

The move comes amid a rapid scramble among U.S. delivery platforms to adopt smart agents in everyday shopping experiences, with Shipt’s step coinciding on the same day Instacart launched its intelligent assistant Clementine, while platforms such as Uber Eats and DoorDash introduced similar shopping assistants earlier this year. The tool also aligns with a broader trajectory pursued by the parent company Target, which recently enhanced its site with AI-driven features, including visual search, consumer-review summarization and personalized shopping experiences.

This shift carries direct operational and economic implications for fast-commerce companies and delivery apps in the Gulf, Egypt and the Levant. Moving from merely sorting digital lists to an “order-versus-ready-basket” logic moves the competitive battle from fleet efficiency and driver speed alone to the software layer’s ability to understand context and match images with local inventory data with high precision. The model also poses a new challenge tied to the computational inference cost per basket, requiring product managers in the region to finely balance the expense of running multimodal models against the incremental revenue gained from higher average order values and faster checkout, especially given the thin profit margins in consumer retail.
