The eighth edition of the UAE AI Camp concluded in Dubai following two weeks of workshops, hackathons, and intensive training programmes. Overseen by the National Programme for Artificial Intelligence under the UAE Artificial Intelligence Office, in partnership with the National Program for Coders, the initiative maintained its open-door policy of admitting participants without requiring prior technical backgrounds. It brought together school and university students, federal government employees, and small business owners in shared classrooms, adding a new chapter to an initiative that had drawn more than 34,000 participants across its previous seven editions.

The latest edition, which ran from 17 to 29 August, featured training tracks focused on fraud detection, password security, digital wellbeing, generative and agentic AI, and robotic and autonomous systems. It also included a Gemini Academy track for students and a future of transport hackathon organised in collaboration with the Ajman Transport Authority, featuring trainers and experts from major technology companies including Google, Microsoft, Intel, Accenture, and BytePlus. This expansion reflects a notable capacity for technical literacy outreach, supported by data from Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report, which indicates that AI tool adoption in the UAE reached 70.1% of the working-age population in the first quarter of 2026, compared to a global average of just 17.8%.

Prompt engineering skills offer an entry point for the individual user, but they do not necessarily reflect an organisation's ability to integrate models into its business lines or stand behind their outputs before regulators and customers.This highlights the contrast between consumer-level fluency and structural readiness. A study by Roland Berger surveying senior executives across the six Gulf Cooperation Council states revealed that nearly 80% of organisations have incorporated AI into their strategic plans, with 85% expecting to increase related budgets this year and customer and citizen experience topping the priority list at 46%, set against an entirely different operational reality.

The survey data shows that only one third of Gulf organisations have an enterprise-wide data strategy, while fewer than one in three possess an operating model capable of scaling projects beyond the pilot stage, and only 28% have a dedicated AI ethics and compliance board. The public sector also outpaced private enterprise, with more than 90% of government entities reporting an AI strategy in development or under execution, compared to roughly 75% of private companies, demonstrating that organizational leadership is driven from the top of the administrative and political hierarchy.

This discrepancy directly affects the workplace across Gulf and regional markets, where the barrier is no longer securing compute hardware or renting advanced models, but a scarcity of talent capable of breaking down workflows and pinpointing precisely what requires automation. Technology leaders and operations managers cannot afford to be misled by high individual adoption rates; generating real returns requires building internal data cleaning and governance pipelines, and turning rapid training skills into practical solutions that curb the cost of trial and error while raising the reliability of automated decisions.

The value of such mass public initiatives remains tied to their ability to supply ministries and enterprises with talent that recognises that the bulk of operational effort goes into preparing data and ensuring compliance, rather than selecting the model itself. The real test in the coming phase will lie in tracking concrete deliverables, measuring implemented projects and finished products, narrowing the gap between public and private sector strategies, and increasing the proportion of organisations establishing governance committees accountable for algorithmic decisions before deployment into live production environments.
