Ten thousand participants in three editions: the African Presidency Competition for Artificial Intelligence moves to Nigeria

The third edition of the African Presidency Competition for Youth in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics 2026 concluded, marking the end of the Egypt-hosted cycle organised by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology under presidential patronage, and handing the flag for the 2027 edition to Nigeria. The online closing ceremony on 29 October announced the winners in 11 technical categories, following the presidential awards presented earlier in the month on the sidelines of the Al-Alamein and Africa Forum and the mid-year African Union summit.

Ten thousand participants have accumulated over three editions since the initiative launched in Tanzania in 2024, reaching participants from 49 African countries in the latest edition. This geographic and numerical expansion reflects an organised pathway for discovering talent and steering it toward practical solutions that address the continent’s development challenges, supported by an institutional alliance that includes the African Development Bank Group’s agency, the Ele-vate AI Africa initiative, and major international telecommunications and information-technology firms.

What we observed in the partner composition is a heavy regional and international financial and development presence, with major organisations such as the International Telecommunication Union, the African Development Bank Group, the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa, and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) taking part in organising and supporting the competition. This alliance gives the initiative a dimension beyond academic competition, establishing a direct link between solution developers and innovators on one side and financiers and development partners on the other, which emerging entrepreneurship ecosystems on the continent need to move from prototype to scalable projects.

The transfer of hosting duties from Egypt to Nigeria for 2027 cements a technological axis that connects the two largest human and economic blocs in the north and west of the continent. The Egyptian Ministry of Communications’ showcase of its role in empowering African talent and building on its hosting experience highlights Cairo’s ambition to cement its position as a regional hub for exporting technological knowledge and training advanced digital skills, leveraging geographic, diplomatic and economic proximity to deeper Africa.

This institutional shift in talent development directly concerns technical decision-makers and hiring managers in the Egyptian and Gulf markets. As the cost of attracting engineering talent locally rises and competition for AI and robotics developers intensifies in business hubs such as Riyadh and Dubai, this organised pathway offers a reliable window for regional companies to access trained and vetted personnel through competitions accredited by international bodies and jointly supported by Arab development banks such as the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa. These initiatives become a source for building remote development teams or establishing engineering competence centres with disciplined operating costs that meet the needs of large digital projects.

The movement also reshapes expansion opportunities for tech firms in the region; the close link between AI innovators in 49 countries and development banks like the African Development Bank and the African Export-Import Bank paves the way for cross-border practical solution markets that address challenges in agriculture, logistics and resource management. Your practical step here is not to watch the competitions as fleeting events but to monitor the outputs of these competitive categories and build early partnership channels with emerging talent before competition for their recruitment intensifies.
