Applied AI Engineer at OpenAI, Abu Dhabi
A hands-on engineering role at OpenAI in Abu Dhabi with a hybrid model: building AI systems with enterprises and moving them from prototype to production, with success measured by actual use rather than demo presentations.
OpenAI is opening a position for an Applied AI Engineer based in Abu Dhabi, within the Applied AI Engineering team of the Market on Entry department. The posting does not seek someone who showcases impressive demos to clients, but an engineer who takes an idea from the use-case selection phase to a system operating in production, and explicitly states that success is measured by the systems that remain in use and their actual impact, not by the number of successful trial demos.
Role:Applied AI Engineer at OpenAI, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Full-time hybrid schedule: three days per week in the office, with assistance in onboarding new employees.
Key challenge:Work directly with large enterprises and digital firms to turn advanced model capabilities into reliable systems within complex environments: existing architectures, diverse data sources, security and governance requirements, and multiple stakeholders across the organization. The role’s holder writes code themselves, builds evaluation harnesses, resolves integration issues, makes decisions affecting model behavior, reliability, latency, cost and safety, and then shares lessons from each implementation with the company’s product and research teams.
Key requirements:
- Demonstrated track record in designing, building and delivering AI or machine-learning systems inside organizations, and moving them from prototype to production. The posting accepts varied backgrounds: machine-learning engineering, forward-deployed engineering, software engineering, client engineering, solution architecture, and technical consulting.
- Concrete personal contributions to code, architecture, evaluation or debugging, not just program management and stakeholder coordination.
- Strong mastery of Python and comfort working across AI application layers; experience with JavaScript or TypeScript is a plus.
- Methodical understanding of AI system evaluation using representative data, automated graders, production signals and human judgment.
- Experience with enterprise production requirements: integration, monitoring, security, privacy, data governance, performance and cost.
The posting notes that experience in a specific sector or with OpenAI products is not required.
Salary:Not disclosed.
Practical step:Before applying, prepare a single example of a system you built yourself and took to production, and describe it in detail: how you measured its quality, the bug you tracked and fixed, and what changed in user behavior after its launch. This is precisely the acceptance criterion set by the posting.
