The latest update of the open-source office suite LibreOffice broke standard download figures, after the developer’s refusal to include generative AI tools automatically became a marketing and practical attraction point. Version 26.8, released on August 26, recorded more than one million installer downloads in a single week, not counting updates delivered through Linux distribution repositories, making it the most popular release in the package’s nearly two-decade history as a free alternative to Microsoft Office.

The exceptional demand followed an explicit announcement by the Document Foundation that its suite would not include built-in generative AI features, citing concerns about data privacy and document confidentiality in government agencies, NGOs, and administrative offices. After the celebration of that figure and extensive media coverage, the foundation clarified its stance in an article signed by Italo Venioli titled “Yes, the Absence of AI Is a Feature Now,” affirming that the decision does not stem from an initial rejection of the technology, but because current-state generative AI cannot meet a critical list of operational standards required for any feature to be included by default.

The foundation identified six uncompromising principles:Execution must be fully under user control, no content may leave the computer without explicit permission, there must be an absolute ban on any form of remote measurement or tracking, reliance on a single technical resource is prohibited, and there must be a complete refusal to compromise open-file-format standards, with any such feature remaining entirely optional. Until tools that meet these conditions mature, the suite simply recommends community-developed extensions for those who wish to connect its applications to AI models at their own discretion.

The foundation also delivered structural criticism of the business model pursued by competing companies that rushed to embed AI in their applications. It argued that inserting a smart assistant into proprietary suites is not a pure technical goal but a justification for vendors to raise monthly subscription prices, and it increases user lock-in by forcing them to store sensitive documents and records within those companies’ cloud infrastructure. This trajectory raises a fundamental question about the space for clean alternatives free of external processing in a market where smart tools are being automatically imposed even in work environments that prefer complete network isolation.

This shift provides direct data for technology and compliance teams in organizations and companies operating in the Gulf, Egypt, and the Arab Levant. As local regulations governing data governance, sovereignty, and confidentiality intensify, especially in government, banking, and legal sectors, cloud suites that automatically integrate generative model calls clash with regulatory constraints that forbid routing documents through external servers or leaking metadata. Keeping the editing environment fully isolated gives information-security officers a low-cost option that protects them from confidentiality breaches without having to negotiate complex contractual exceptions with global vendors.
