Regulatory documents and updates to the terms of use for the “RoboTaxi” app disclosed a package of technical and operational details for Tesla’s self-driving “Cybercab” vehicle, coinciding with the opening of a formal investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States into the vehicle’s launch plan. The vehicle relies entirely on computer vision via cameras and AI models, without lidar sensors, aiming to lower operating costs compared to competing solutions such as Waymo.

The operating conditions presently prohibit children under thirteen from riding in the Cybercab, while the company permits individuals aged eight to seventeen to ride Model Y vehicles designated for the RoboTaxi fleet, requiring an adult to accompany anyone under eighteen in both cases.Regarding interior design, Tesla abandoned the standard child-seat anchorage points known as LATCH in favor of securing seats solely with seat belts, as part of a move to reduce mechanical components and cut costs.The documents also specify that the vehicle’s windows cannot be fully opened at present, while the cabin is equipped with wired power outlets rated at 90 watts.

The company programmed an automated response sequence for collisions that instantly unlocks the doors electronically, inflates the airbags, activates warning lights and interior illumination, disconnects the high-voltage battery, vents the windows, applies the brakes to stop and park the vehicle, and opens a two-way audio-visual link with the passenger-support team. The automatic door-unlock feature gains particular significance after Tesla faced criticism and investigations in the United States and China over electronic door locks, which led to the recall of three million vehicles from the Chinese market last month because of the risk of passengers being trapped after accidents. Tesla placed a manually operated emergency opening handle in a conspicuous position on the armrest of each door alongside the external button.

At the mechanical control level, the Cybercab adopts a fully wired brake system, replacing hydraulic pipes and pumps with electronic actuators that directly control the brake calipers to reduce engineering complexity and manufacturing cost, continuing the wired steering approach previously used in the Cybertruck.

This shift toward lowering hardware costs puts transportation fleet operators and smart-mobility authorities in the Gulf before a trade-off between cost and operational readiness.While Gulf cities aim to accelerate the adoption of autonomous ride-hailing vehicles, the ban on young passengers and the absence of child-seat anchors impose limits on the vehicle’s suitability for the region’s prevalent family-travel pattern, steering its initial use toward individual business travel. Conversely, the reliance on wired brakes and steering and the exclusive dependence on computer vision lower fleet investment costs, but require local regulators in Riyadh and Dubai to examine physical safety requirements and electronic-door responses under high-temperature conditions before granting wide-scale commercial operating licenses.
