The architect spends roughly eighty percent of their daily time on drawing and execution details, while the essence of design receives only twenty percent of work hours. This paradox, which has been entrenched as a professional norm in engineering offices for decades, prompted architect and contractor Al Drams to found Blueprints AI in Santa Monica, California, in 2025 together with data-science expert Coco Cao, aiming to flip the equation so that eighty percent of hours are devoted to architectural creativity and only twenty percent to producing execution documents.

The idea of automatically generating construction documents occurred to Drams about two decades ago when he wrote his university thesis on design-document generation software for schools, but the lack of technology capable of processing drawings prevented its implementation until generative AI models based on large language models emerged in late 2022. From that point, the founders trained the company’s models on an archive spanning eight years of approved engineering drawing sets extracted from Drams’s design-and-construction office in the United States. This effort yielded the first version of the software, which generates architectural plans ready for permitting and code-compliant within minutes from a two-dimensional sketch or digital file, offered under monthly subscriptions ranging from $3,200 to $8,500, with bespoke pricing for large enterprises.

The most prominent technological shift manifests as instant synchronization between architectural, structural and services drawings whenever any design element is modified. The second version of the software, unveiled by the company at the Startup Battlefield 200 gathering during the Tech Crunch Disrupt conference and released for public use this week, enables generation of integrated plans covering architecture, construction, mechanics, electricity, plumbing and interior design in a single pass from a textual description or preliminary sketch. The tool does not merely accelerate production, it also allows the user to make adjustments that automatically propagate across the entire project across all disciplines while instantly verifying compliance with local building codes, and the company is developing a third version that will add structural safety analyses and electrical distribution board design.

Legal liability and professional accreditation remain a dividing line that the algorithm cannot cross, regardless of its technical precision. The company’s leadership asserts that the platform does not eliminate the role of the licensed architect, but relieves them of repetitive routine tasks, as regulations require accredited professionals to review documents and affix their official seals before submitting them to the relevant authorities for permitting. Consequently, human effort shifts from drawing lines and coordinating conflicts between pipe and wiring networks to auditing final outputs and ensuring their engineering and regulatory soundness.

This shift directly impacts the professional landscape in the Arab region, especially in Gulf markets and Egypt, which are experiencing massive urban expansion and an accelerated pace of major project permitting. Regional engineering consultancy offices that charge fees based on extended hours spent on drawing and preparing execution plans will face pressure to adjust their pricing models as automation reduces these durations to minutes. Maintaining large teams dedicated to routine drawing will also become financially unjustifiable, shifting the required skill set from manual drafting software proficiency to rigorous engineering review and verification of compliance with local building codes and specialized municipal requirements.

The company targets engineering consultancy and design offices as well as real-estate developers and project owners, while considering a fixed-fee option per individual project. For offices and firms in our markets, the issue does not appear to be merely adopting new software to shorten transaction times, but a comprehensive reorganization of how engineering offices are managed and staffed, where true value becomes tied to the engineering seal and professional responsibility for outputs generated by a highly efficient intelligent system.
