Amazon has made its AI-powered assistant, Alexa Plus, available free of charge to all compatible Fire TV users across the United States, with no Amazon Prime subscription required. The upgrade arrives automatically for eligible users without requiring a dedicated app download or a new sign-up, bringing generative voice assistant capabilities directly to television screens.

Eliminating monthly subscription fees and bringing automatic upgrades to home screensThe move ends previous pricing requirements, under which Alexa Plus cost $19.99 per month for users without an Amazon Prime membership, following an initial rollout limited to new Fire TV hardware unveiled last autumn. The list of compatible devices now includes current-generation Fire TV Stick devices, the Fire TV Cube, Amazon smart TVs, and third-party smart TVs with the operating system built in, including models from Hisense and Panasonic.

The update introduces advanced features including conversational search, smart home controls, and AI-backed recommendations. Under these capabilities, viewers are no longer required to search for titles by exact name, and can instead request suggestions based on theme, age rating, or popularity, such as asking for a top-rated thriller or a historical drama led by a prominent female character. The assistant also enables smart home management through the television, including streaming live feeds from Ring cameras directly on screen.

Doubling conversational engagement and shifting screens from passive viewing to direct dialogueAmazon data indicates that Fire TV users on Alexa Plus hold roughly twice as many conversations as they did with the original Alexa assistant, pointing to a shift in consumer behavior from treating television solely as a traditional source of relaxation toward direct, ongoing interaction with AI via the screen.

The move forms part of a broader technology sector push to integrate AI services into consumer electronics via automated upgrades. Google integrated its Gemini model into Google TV earlier this year, replacing basic search features with intelligent conversational modes, while Roku upgraded its voice assistant with AI over the past year, with both companies citing engagement-time metrics to point to rising consumer adoption.
