OpenAI Offers Free Tools to 100,000 Researchers, but Will Arab Universities Get In?

Imagine a researcher at an Arab university developing a new model for the early diagnosis of a disease. All they need is a larger context window and deeper research capabilities to complete months of work in weeks. That is exactly what OpenAI promised 10,000 researchers worldwide this week, yet it did not name a single university in the region among the first group.

The announcement, issued on Wednesday, July 29, launches ChatGPT for Academic Researchers: free access for 10,000 researchers, professors and postdoctoral fellows at selected academic institutions. The programme is set to expand gradually to 100,000 researchers by 2027. Each invited researcher can also add four colleagues from their institution at no cost, which means the actual number of beneficiaries will exceed the headline figure.

What researchers actually receive is not simply a standard ChatGPT account. It includes access to GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, the version designed for long and complex tasks, along with an expanded deep research feature that examines hundreds of scientific sources at once, and automation tools through Codex and ChatGPT Work. This is not OpenAI’s first move in this direction. In May, the company distributed a $50 million package of resources to selected research teams. The new programme extends the same idea into a stated financial commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research. The company also says researchers’ data will not be used to train models by default.

This is where the geopolitical dimension becomes clear. This is not a neutral grant, but an investment in soft power. When one company’s tools become the default infrastructure for the world’s most productive laboratories, the programme’s admission criteria, not only its technical capabilities, become a mechanism that determines who advances in the scientific publishing race and who falls behind.

The published criteria require an institution to be recognised, degree-granting and highly active in research. In theory, that broad definition includes regional universities such as King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, the American University in Cairo and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. But at the time of writing, OpenAI had not announced a single Arab institution in the first group. It was also unclear whether applications were open to any university that met the criteria or invitations were limited to institutions selected in advance by the company.

Even the definition of “high research activity” deserves scrutiny. The published terms address professors and postdoctoral researchers at institutions with intensive scientific output. That standard automatically favours large universities with substantial research budgets and leaves individual researchers or small teaching teams at emerging institutions entirely out of the picture, regardless of the quality of their work.

The question OpenAI does not answer is what happens when the free access ends. Several analyses have suggested that free access programmes for researchers could later become a channel for creating long-term institutional dependence, as an entire research laboratory grows accustomed to one company’s tools before the paid period begins. OpenAI’s promise not to use researchers’ data for training does not eliminate that possibility, because dependence is measured not only in data but also in the workflow itself.

The honest conclusion is that the opportunity is real, and OpenAI’s promised figure of 100,000 researchers is large enough to change the pace of work across entire disciplines. But waiting for the company to choose an Arab university is not a strategy in itself. Anyone who wants a place in the programme must apply rather than wait for an invitation.
