Cursor, an AI developer software startup, has officially joined SpaceX, completing a major acquisition that brings the coding tool under Elon Musk's umbrella and links it to his extensive computing resources. In a post on its official blog, Cursor confirmed the completion of the transition and merger following months of negotiations, tying the future of the coding tool to advanced computing capabilities and hyperscale data centres.

The acquisition path from initial partnership to a sixty-billion-dollar deal
The trajectory between the two companies dates back to April, when SpaceX entered into an agreement with Cursor to jointly develop technologies, an arrangement that granted SpaceX an option to acquire the startup for $60 billion. Two months after announcing that agreement, in a development that coincided with SpaceX becoming a publicly listed company, both parties announced tangible progress toward exercising the purchase option and completing formal procedures. With this closing, Cursor joins the same corporate entity that earlier this year saw SpaceX acquire Musk's AI company, xAI.

Access to the world's largest GPU fleet
In announcing the completion of the deal, Cursor highlighted the immediate technical benefits of the merger, repeatedly emphasizing SpaceX's computing infrastructure. The startup noted that joining SpaceX will give it direct access to the world's largest fleet of GPUs. Citing its vision for the upcoming phase, the company stated that SpaceX is building the compute capacity needed to advance AI capabilities and expand beyond current limits, adding that Cursor will serve as a vital venue for translating this intelligence into practical, useful tools for developers.

Leasing compute to tech giants alongside energy and pollution challenges
The acquisition comes at a time when SpaceX operates an extensive computing infrastructure that not only serves its internal projects, but also leases operational capacity to leading AI companies, including Anthropic and Google. Conversely, this rapid computing expansion faces environmental and legal scrutiny, as SpaceX contends with a lawsuit over pollution and emissions from gas turbines used to power its massive data centres, confronting its hardware and software expansion with regulatory hurdles alongside the growth of its computing fleet.
