Google Pairs Local Gemma 4 With Agents That Control Computers

What happened: In June, Google announced the open Gemma 4 12B model, which runs entirely locally on standard computers with no more than 16GB of memory. It uses a unified, encoder free architecture that combines audio and images, as well as MTP Drafters technology to reduce latency. In parallel, Google launched Computer Use within Gemini 3.5 Flash, allowing agents to see user interfaces, click and type across browsers and applications, with defences against prompt injection. The company also launched Android 17.

The lens: Digital sovereignty. Local inference is the shortest route to data sovereignty. A powerful model running within an organisation’s own walls removes the dilemma of transferring sensitive data across borders. For government and banking institutions in the region, Gemma 4 and similar models turn the question of where data is processed from a contractual negotiation into an internal technical decision. The layer of agents that control computers is the next battle over gateways. Whoever owns it controls the entire interface of digital work.
