What happened: At the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, or ASCO, Onc.AI presented pivotal validation results for Onclara IO. The model analyses longitudinal medical images to provide an early assessment of how patients with non-small cell lung cancer, or NSCLC, respond to immunotherapy. The advance lies in the validation method itself: a real world dataset of metastatic tumours, accessed through a partnership with Flatiron Health. This follows the model’s FDA Breakthrough Device designation and a collaboration with GSK.

The lens: Governance and regulation. Moving from controlled test environments to actual patient data is the new gold standard for the ethics and data governance of medical models. Healthcare institutions in the region negotiating with diagnostic AI vendors now have a simple screening question: was the product validated on real world data or only in a laboratory? The answer separates a clinical tool from a marketing product.
