RAISE Health Confronts AI Biology’s Promise and Its Bioweapon Risk

What happened: Leaders from science, medicine and government gathered at Stanford University on June 2 for the third RAISE Health symposium. The discussion moved beyond proof of concept to AI’s role as a core engine for drug discovery and for shortening development timelines through molecular structure analysis. The symposium coincided with a TIME feature documenting the unprecedented opportunities at the intersection of generative AI and modern biology. Scientists also warned that these dual-use tools could enable non-state actors to engineer biological weapons.
The lens: Digital sovereignty. The intersection of AI and biological engineering is now treated as a global national security issue requiring rigorous sovereign oversight. For countries in the region building emerging biotechnology sectors, there is an opportunity to establish digital biosafety frameworks early. Joining the standards process while the rules are being written is far less costly than importing a finished framework later.
