What happened: On June 22, UN Women published a critical report warning that current algorithms are not narrowing historical gaps but entrenching gender stereotypes because of biases embedded in training data. The report links that bias directly to the absence of women from teams engineering and designing foundation models. It also warns that digital stereotypes amplify abuse directed at women and deepen their exclusion from positions of technical decision making.
The lens: Global South solidarity. The Arab region has a rare opportunity to build a talent ecosystem that does not reproduce Silicon Valley’s imbalances. Programmes that train women in AI engineering are not an auxiliary social initiative. They are an engineering requirement for the quality of the next generation of Arabic models. The region’s data represents two halves of society, and anyone building with only one half is building a deficient model.
