The guide provides step by step instructions for those who prefer a tech setup less cluttered with generative additions, laying out opt out paths across operating systems, productivity applications, web browsers, and instant messaging services.
Generative artificial intelligence tools are creeping into default system and software settings, prompting users to reclaim control over their device interfaces through direct configuration options.
On mobile devices, the guide details steps to rein in Gemini on Android, whether by uninstalling the application entirely depending on the manufacturer, or by turning it off within Messages through message settings and disabling the assistant. The steps also include pausing Gemini Apps activity history and deleting past activity, disconnecting connected apps in personal intelligence settings, and preventing the assistant from hijacking the power button via system gesture settings. In the Apple ecosystem on iPhone 16 models as well as newer Mac and iPad versions, users can turn off Apple Intelligence entirely through system settings, alongside disabling app learning features available under Siri and Dictation privacy options.
On Windows 11 desktops, Copilot extends across the operating system and built in software. The OS allows users to uninstall it from the Start menu or app management, or to switch it off through taskbar settings if direct removal is unavailable. In Notepad, users must disable Copilot features separately within the application settings, alongside turning off automated text generation and default image tools in the Photos app and Snipping Tool, adjusting privacy options in File Explorer, and, if needed, turning to dedicated third party tools to purge built in packages from the system.

Web browsers require differing approaches. In Chrome, users can navigate to the flags page and set integrated artificial intelligence and Gemini features to disabled. In Edge, turning off the sidebar and Copilot button requires visiting appearance settings, as well as disabling its use in writing tools via language options. By contrast, Firefox, starting with version 148, offers dedicated controls to block AI enhancements entirely from its settings menu, alongside the option to use AI free search alternatives such as the dedicated DuckDuckGo edition.
Opt out controls also extend to cloud software, communication platforms, and collaborative workspaces. Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader provide options to turn off generative AI and restore the classic interface, while general Gmail settings permit disabling smart features across Google Workspace and connected products. WhatsApp includes toggles to disable suggested replies, AI stickers, and message summaries, while workspace administrators in Slack and Zoom accounts can disable AI functions and automated meeting notes transcription to protect meeting and data privacy.
