Academic institutions across the region are restructuring technical capacity-building initiatives by moving away from isolated workshops toward dedicated institutional fellowships, as seen in Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University's graduation of the first cohort from its Artificial Intelligence Competencies Fellowship, which drew 53 academics and students from several institutions to embed technical applications in teaching, research, and innovation.

The composition of the inaugural cohort reflected a strategic focus on faculty, bringing together 42 instructional staff alongside 11 male and female students from local universities in an effort to train trainers and channel skills through core educational pathways. Held under the banner Algorithm of Impact as part of the university's AI Year programming, the track convened participants from five institutions, King Saud University, Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, Saudi Electronic University, and a regional contingent from the University of Bahrain that broadened the cross-border exchange of technical expertise.

This direction carries direct operational implications for higher education and the regional labor market across the Gulf, addressing the persistent divide between theoretical curricula and digital economy requirements by upskilling faculty directly. When an instructor acquires applied AI competencies, the impact transfers directly into assignment design, research supervision, and the integration of automation and analytical tools into daily teaching, multiplying the initiative's reach across thousands of students each year rather than siloing skills in extracurricular courses disconnected from study plans.

The model also requires human resource departments and academic development deanships at universities and research centers to recalibrate professional evaluation metrics, assessing technical readiness not by casual tool adoption but by an academic's capacity to direct transformation within their discipline. Expanding such partnerships, as demonstrated by the participation of the University of Bahrain, helps establish aligned regional training frameworks that standardize digital skills benchmarks and lower re-skilling costs across the regional talent market.
